Baby Jake's Kidnapping Leads to Sam's Unraveling

The secret of Jake's paternity gets even hotter when Sam appears to be the No. 1 suspect in the tot's kidnapping.  The week begins as news of the snatching spreads across Port Charles like wildfire..

"Elizabeth tells Jason that the kid has been kidnapped, and she's hysterical," begins Steve Burton.  "I'm trying not to react how Steve would react.  I'd be out of my mind.  Fortunately for Jason, he has that calm streak when things are going wrong, but he is definitely affected.  He's trying to get information out of her: "Who did this?  Why did they do this?--anything that he can."

Ironically, the one mystery the kidnapping does solve is the doubt Jason had about not claiming the baby as his own.  "Elizabeth thinks maybe somebody found out Jake was Jason's son, so maybe he was taken for that reason,"  Burton continues.  "All these things are going through his head and, believe it or not, it makes Jason think that maybe he did make the right decision when he stayed quiet.  At this point, he's in jail, arrested for murder.  This happened with Michael - somebody wanted to get even with Sonny and kidnapped Michael.  He sees the kid and it kills him.  He wants to be a part of his life, but Jason's probably the most unselfish person in history (laughs)

As the police investigate, Sam's alibi - (she saw Liz and the kids in the park, but walked back to the TV studio alone) - seems shaky.  "Sam has been saturating herself in her work to cover up the tremendous amount of pain that she's in because she's unable to have children," explains Kelly Monaco.  "I don't think she's even dabbled on the layer of hurt that she's feeling about this. Motherhood was this girl's dream.  It went smashing down in pieces and she maybe got to digest that for about 20 minutes before she buried it under some bricks deep inside of her.  "I think Sam will hit some kind of a point where she's not going to know which end is up."

Now that Jason knows Sam's been keeping secrets from him, he's definitely wary.  "A couple days before, Amelia told Jason all this stuff about Sam," notes Burton.  "That she married these guys and stole from them, then she'd leave town.  She did it to Amelia's dad, who caught her, got violent with her and Sam shot him, allegedly in self defense.  Then Amelia told Jason that Sam told her that Jake was his.  He's like, "What the heck is going on her?" And then the baby's kidnapped?  He's like, "This can't be happening."

But it is.  When Spinelli does Jason's legwork he discovers that Sam recently ordered baby clothes.  Sam denies to a skeptical Amelia that she had anything to do with Jake's disappearance.  As Spinelli and Sonny do their part to help Jason cope with Sam's suspect behavior, Jason makes a request.  "When Sonny asks, "Do you think Sam took him?  Jason says, "Put a tap on her cell phone and tail her."  says Burton.  "He can't take any chances.  It would be crazy if it turns out to be that way"

A dejected Sam hits the bottle and blasts Elizabeth, then goes after Lucky.  Will she spill?  "She's an alcoholic right now," chuckles Burton.  "She's boozed up at noon at the Metro Court (laughs).  She's dealing with her issues with booze at this point, I guess.  I know he hopes she's not capable of something of this magnitude, but is she?  Of course, he's not one to judge since he kills people.(laughs)

The moment of truth finally arrives when at the end of her rope, Sam realizes it's time to speak now or forever hold her peace.  She drops the bomb to Jason that she knows the truth about him being Jake's father.  During the emotionally fraught confrontation, Sam relays feelings of hurt, anger and betrayal.  Jason is apologetic but defends the choices he made.  "The part that hurts is not the part that Elizabeth carried Jason's baby, say Monaco.  "It's the dishonesty. It's the "Why couldn't you tell me?  Why couldn't you trust me enough to believe that I would e okay with it?"  At this point these two aren't trusting each other and without that, you'd better start from square one or not bother to start at all."

Will this revelation spell the end of Jason and Sam?  "Things have been building up between them for a long time now," hedges Burton.  "Something's going to have to break.  Either this will kill them or make them stronger."

And baby makes three:  Sam knows Jason fathered Liz's baby.  Will she squeal to Lucky?

The Unusual Suspects

Whodunit?  Here's the rundown on who could have kidnapped baby Jake.

Amelia:  This slick chick came to town with one agenda:  to torture Sam, whom she blamed for the death of her father.  Now privy to all of Sam's secrets, could she have snatched the tot to frame her prey?

Elizabeth:  Lainey pointed out that Liz could be suffering from postpartum depression.  Could the good nurse have possibly harmed hr own child?

Jerry:  Kidnapping is small potatoes to the man who shot Robin in cold blood, poisoned Nikolas, terrorized the Metro Court hostages and sent Alan to his death.

Sam:  Considering she lost a baby girl three years ago, Sam wouldn't be the first woman to snap and claim another child as her own

Spinelli:  Is it possible the lovably loyal computer geek's circuits have overloaded?  Could The Jackal have crossed over in the territory of The Evil One?  Could he even change a baby's diaper if he had to?

The X Factor:  Jake's paternity is one of the worst-kept secrets in town, so it is possible that one of Jason's enemies also found out and realized that precious treasure isn't always buried in the sand.
